neues theater

The neues theater is the theatre of the City of Halle. It has been the centrepiece of the Kulturinsel (“Culture Island”) complex since 1981. In its two auditoriums, Saal and Werft, the neues theater offers an eclectic programme ranging from traditional theatre and comedies right through to contemporary drama productions.
The "neues theater" is situated in the center of our so called Saale-City, between the Große Ulrichstraße and the Universitätsplatz. The new theater is more than just a place of the performing arts. Until the theater’s foundation in 1981, a movie theater resided in this complex of buildings, so the actors had to share the stage of the "Landestheater Halle" with four other divisions.  The beginnings of the own lieu were quite modest, however, the ensemble moved into a house which once accommodated the so called “Emperor’s Halls”, the city of Halle’s greatest amusement establishment. Today, the so called “Isle of Culture” arose around the theater. This extraordinary cultural site belongs to the city of Halle just like the river Saale. It is a theater without a drop in which the entire room becomes "stage" and the audience finds itself in the middle of the events.  The crossbars with the seats are relocatable, so that the room can be arranged variably, according to requirements, and can be transformed into the most diverse "landscapes". All gates are open almost all the time, no matter if someone just wants to have a look or is looking forward to a play. Whoever is going to see the dramatics has got the free choice of where he or she wants to sit at the same affordable price everywhere. Ringing bells invite for a visit and in the mornings remind the actors of their rehearsal.

The new theater awaits its guests with a somewhat diverse program, from the great classics to the one man show, from tragedy to comedy, from revue to reading… and from time to time there may be dancing.
